After eight months of procrastination I’ve been inspired to write another post after my search for Lightroom CC tutorials took me to professional photographer Doug Chinnery’s site.
I’ve been on a couple of workshops with Doug in 2015, and I’ve found him to be an excellent and supportive teacher. Whilst on his site I noticed a blog post titled – Integrity & Generosity in Photography – Become a ‘Photographic Philanthropist’ and it struck me that in my rush to get this site up I probably hadn’t given Doug the credit he deserved in inspiring me in 2015.
It’s easily done of course, and I doubt I would have created the landscape photos on this site without the patient tuition and support from the tutors and courses I’ve attended in 2015. So without further ado, here’s my 2015 tour list.
Brighton – Long Exposures

9 – 11th March 2015 Led by Doug Chinnery
Here comes the big stopper! As the title suggests this is based in Brighton (on the south coast of UK of for US readers) and my first light and land workshop of the year. It was a short burst of activity, about two full days, but Doug managed to teach me a set up routine which I now have laminated in my camera bag, and how to use my expensive Lee Big Stopper filter in manual mode.
Cornwall – St Michael’s Mount & Surrounding
more info: Light and Land
13– 16th March 2015 Led by Carla Regler
A two day break from Doug and it was off to St Michaeal’s Mount in Marazian, Cornwall. Another relatively short burst of activity approximately three full days, Carla packed in a sunset session straight away and then it was off to Land’s End, Godrevy Lighthouse, Botallack Tin Mines and St. Ives with a few sunsets and sunrises at our base in Marazian.
London Night Workshop

Talk about packed! How about squeezing in the House of Parliament, London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Millennium Bridge, The Docklands, The Tower of London and much more. Doug and his taxi driver mate, Terry Gibbons, take you on a through an unforgettable sunset to sunrise photography experience. Another chance to try out long exposures for me and then my first ever lightning capture.
Dorset Countryside

22 – 25th August 2015 Led by Charlie Waite
Time with a legend. My final workshop of 2015 and what a way to end it. Charlie Waite is a world renowned photographer and the reason I chose Light and Land to help me on my journey to becoming a decent photographer. But most of all he is as Harry Enfield would say ” A bloody nice bloke”. I was interviewed after the tour for the Light and Land site and I was more than happy to oblige. Paying it forward in my own small way
So back to the reason for this post. Thank you to Doug who taught me long exposure techniques, to Carla who taught me to think about the crop, and to Charlie who taught me that less is more – each of them has supported, mentored and inspired me throughout 2015. In my photography portfolio, you will see shots that they have helped me set up and compose. I have a long way to go before I can stamp my mark and call a shot an “Andy Hill” shot, but when I do, it will include pieces of wisdom from Doug, Carla and Charlie – Cheers!
